Abstract:The world’s growing energy demand has motivated scientists to look for methods to improve the use of resources. The exergy concept has been increasingly applied for the assessment of energy systems and processes. This paper introduces the exergy hub approach, a framework that can be used for the optimization of multi-carrier energy supply systems in which exergy conservation is aimed for. The approach is based on the energy hub concept, however it uses exergetic efficiencies instead of energetic efficiencies for the optimization. Moreover, this paper presents a comparison between the results for the optimal dispatch obtained from an exergy efficiency optimization and the optimal dispatch obtained from an energy efficiency optimization. Finally a scheduling optimization is performed to identify which combination of available units gives the best exergy and energy performance for different load ratios according to the outside temperature. The results provide valuable insights into the influence of using exergy as an assessment tool in energy supply systems with multiple energy carriers, both from a technical and an economical point of view.
